During 1986, the Campbelltown Ghosts Baseball Club was very saddened when one of its Under 16 players, Richard Allsworth, and his brother were lost in a motor vehicle accident on Appin Road.
Richard was the first ‘elite’ Junior player at Ghosts and his loss was heavily felt by his Club mates and the wider community.
Richard’s parents donated Richard’s bat to the Club as a keepsake and it was decided the bat should become the centrepiece of a new trophy which continues to be awarded today.
The ‘Richard Allsworth Trophy’ is presented to a ‘second year’ Ghosts player in the Under 16s (now Senior League) age group who achieves similar elite/representative status and shows demonstrated strong ties and commitment to the Club and wider baseball community.
The trophy is not awarded annually – to preserve Richard’s memory, only those who excel both on and off the field in all aspects of baseball are deemed worthy recipients.
MEMORIAL TREE AND PLAQUE
Richard is also remembered through a tree which was planted within the Woodlands complex near today’s amenities block. The tree was originally accompanied by a memorial plaque but in 2017, the plaque was relocated to the northern side of the Club building, overlooking the main diamond.
